Hace unos meses vi una película que me fascinó, tanto a nivel de trama como a nivel estético: The Love Witch. En ella, una de las cosas que más destacan son los ojos de la protagonista, Elaine Parks.

Además de los primeros planos, el maquillaje es lo que más ayuda a captar la atención y a envolverlos de ese misticismo. La sombra azul es lo que le da ese aspecto tan «mágico» y como de «otro tiempo».

A few months ago I saw a movie that I loved it, both plot and aesthetic: The Love Witch. In this film, one of the things that stand out are the eyes of the protagonist, Elaine Parks.

In addition to the close-ups, makeup is what helps the most to capture the attention and to increase the mysticism. The blue shadow is what gives her that «magical» and «of another time» look.

En seguida me recordó a otra película en la que Christina Ricci luce un tono parecido en sus ojos, Buffalo ’66. Aunque la trama no me entusiasmó, el look de Layla, el personaje de Christina Ricci, con su pelo rubio y su sombra de ojos azul brillante a juego con su vestido, es tan icónico que se me quedó grabado para siempre.

It immediately reminded me of another movie in which Christina Ricci wears a similar tone in her eyes, Buffalo ’66. Although the plot did not excite me, the look of Layla, the character of Christina Ricci, with her blond hair and her bright blue eyeshadow that matched her dress, is so iconic that it was stick in my mind.

Entonces me di cuenta de que, a pesar de haber múltiples referencias en el cine y la televisión, es un color que la gente no usa diariamente. En los años 60 era bastante popular usar el azul, quizás por eso cuando lo vemos nos da esa sensación retro, pero resulta curioso que esta tendencia no haya vuelto. ¿Por qué? Es cierto que, actualmente, se apuesta más por los colores intensos que contrastan con la piel, pero los tonos cálidos siguen ganando.

Así que empecé a buscar información y encontré este interesantísimo artículo sobre cómo la sombra de color azul, a pesar de resultar muy artificial y teatral, la hemos aceptado como un cliché de la feminidad. Prueba de ello es que los kits de maquillaje para niñas suelen traer sombra azul y pintalabios rojo y que tanto drags como transexuales utilizan ese mismo binomio para acentuar su feminidad.

Then I realized that, despite having multiple references in film and television, it is a color that people do not use daily. In the 60s it was quite popular to wear blue, maybe that is the reason for the retro vibes, but it is curious that this trend has not returned. Why? It is true that, nowadays, the trend is wear intense colors that contrast with the skin, but almost everybody prefer the warm ones.

So I started to look for information and I found this very interesting article about how the blue eyeshadow, despite being very artificial and theatrical, it is accepted as a cliché of femininity. Proof of this is that makeup kits for little girls usually bring blue shadow and red lipstick and that both drag and transsexuals use that same binomial to accentuate their femininity.

El azul es un color que transmite paz, serenidad y confianza. También se asocia con lo celestial y divino, de hecho, la virgen María suele representarse con un manto de este color. No obstante, no podemos olvidar que tiene ciertas connotaciones melancólicas, la palabra blue, en inglés, se usa para designar el sentimiento de tristeza.

Ya a nivel místico, el azul se vincula con el chakra de la garganta. Este chakra se corresponde con la comunicación, la libertad de expresión, la independencia, el sentido de la seguridad, la lealtad, la organización y planificación.

Así que podemos suponer que usar sombra de ojos azul nos da ese aspecto de seguridad y confianza, un poco melancólico y nos vuelve más etéreas.

So we can assume that using blue eyeshadow gives us that aspect of security and confidence, a bit melancholic and makes us more ethereal.
