Tengo que confesar que soy muy fan de los thrillers noventeros sobre adolescentes o chicas jóvenes, aparentemente encantadoras, pero con un lado malvado que usan para para obtener lo que quieren manipulando a todos los de su alrededor. Y, básicamente, ese es el resumen de la película Poison Ivy de 1992.

I have to confess that I’m a big fan of 90’s thriller movies about charming young girls with a dark side who manipulate everyone in order to get what they want. And that’s pretty much what 1992’s film Poison Ivy is what about.

No es que sea un peliculón pero si te gusta mínimamente la estética de los 90 y Drew Barrymore, la vas a disfrutar. A mí, lo que más me ha gustado, con diferencia, de esta película son los outfits de Ivy y, obviamente, tenía que hacer un post hablando de ellos, porque son GOALS.

La ropa de Ivy sufre una evolución a lo largo de la trama, pasa de un estilo grunge a uno mucho más sexy y sofisticado, y la verdad es que Drew Barrymore está espectacular con ambos.

Obviously, it is not the greatest film of all time, however, if you like 90’s aesthetic and Drew Barrymore you will enjoy it. What I really like about this film is Ivy’s outfits and, of course, I had to write about them because they’re GOALS.

Ivy’s clothing changes throughout the film. Her initial grunge style evolved into outfits much more sophisticated and sexies and I must say that Drew Barrymore looks ashtonishing in both of them.

Vamos a empezar analizando su estilo grunge. En los 90 el grunge estaba en auge, convirtiéndose en el estilo característico de los adolescentes de la generación X. Lo que nació como una «moda antimoda», donde los jóvenes buscaban, por encima de todo, la funcionalidad de las prendas que adquirían a precios asequibles en las tiendas de segunda mano, muy pronto captó el interés de la prensa especializada y de los diseñadores.

Ejemplo de esto último es la colección primavera/verano que Marc Jacobs diseñó para la firma Perry Ellis en 1993 basándose en el look grunge. Fue premiado como el mejor diseñador del año por el Consejo de Diseñadores de Moda de América.

Let’s start with grunge. In the 90’s, grunge was the characteristic style among generation X teenagers. It was born as «anti-fashion style» created by young people who were looking for comfortable and useful garments that they acquired from affordable prices in thrift stores. However, soon it drew attention of the specialised press and fashion designers.

For example, in 1993, Marc Jacobs designed a collection for Perry Ellis based on grunge style. He was awarded the Women’s Designer of the Year Award by the Council of Fashion Designers of America.

La estética cómoda y desaliñada de esta forma de vestir tiene coherencia, no solo con la moda del momento entre los adolescentes, sino también con los origenes humildes de Ivy. Al principio de la trama, podemos ver a nuestra protagonista con diversos looks en los que destacan su chupa de cuero y sus botas de cowboy desgastadas acompañando faldas de vuelo estampadas y tops cortos.

Ivy’s disheveled appearance has sense not just because it was the trend in the 90’s but it has coherence with her humble origin. At the beginning of the plot we can see the protagonist wearing some looks, matching her classic leather jacket and scuffed cowboy boots with floaty patterned skirts and cropped tops.

También llama la atención la salvaje melena rubia y ondulada de Ivy que termina de darle ese toque rebelde. Me recuerda muchísimo al típico peinado que llevaban los cantantes de glam metal de los 80. En algunas escenas la semejanza con Sebastian Bach, vocalista de Skid Row, es brutal, ¿no os parece?

Another iconic thing about Ivy is her curly and wild hair what emphasize her rebel spirit. It reminded me of glam metal singers hairstyles from the 80’s. In some scenes she looks exactly like Sebastian Bach, vocalist from Skid Row. Don’t you think?

La apariencia alternativa y descuidada de Ivy no encaja con los conservadores padres de su nueva amiga rica y, cuando se va a vivir con Cooper, la madre de esta le empieza a dejar su ropa de diseño.

Ivy’s scruffy style doesn’t fit the lifestyle of her rich new friend’s parents. So, when she moved to Cooper’s house, her mom lent Ivy her design clothes.

Gracias a eso, podemos ver a Ivy con un estilo mucho más refinado y chic. Empieza a usar camisas y blusas, así como vestidos y faldas ajustadas. Además, su pelo pierde las características ondulaciones. De esta forma, la chica grunge se convierte en una Barbie Malibú.

This made possible that Ivy could impressed us with more sophisticated looks. She starts wearing stylish blouses and tight dresses and skirts. Also, her hair becomes straight. That’s how the grunge girl turns into Barbie Malibú. 

Pero, sin duda, la prenda que más me gusta de sus nuevos estilismos es esta gabardina roja, que le da un rollazo increíble a todos los looks. Cuando la vi por primera vez me recordó inmediatamente a la gabardina que usa Julia Roberts al inicio de Pretty Woman. Incluso la combinan de un modo muy similar, con tops blancos y minifaldas. Por cierto, tengo un post hablando sobre algunos outfits de esa peli también.

The garment that I like the most in her outfits is this red trench coat. I think it matches very well all the looks. When I saw it for the first time I immediately thought about a similar coat that Julia Roberts wears at the beginning of Pretty Woman. Even they combined it in the same way, with white tops and tight miniskirts. By the way, I have a post about the outfits of that film too.
