Igual no te has dado cuenta, pero mediante la ropa expresamos muchas cosas, como nuestra personalidad o nuestro estado de ánimo. Sí, cada vez que nos vestimos estamos comunicando algún tipo de mensaje. Por eso, se trata de una poderosa herramienta que no debemos pasar por alto, sino aprender a usarla para nuestro propio beneficio.
Para ilustrar mejor este concepto, en el artículo de hoy me gustaría hablar del conocido como «Revenge Dress», un vestido que Lady Di usó para mandar un mensaje bastante claro. Algo así como: «¡Mira lo que te estás perdiendo!» o «¡Qué te den, Charles!».
Maybe you didn’t notice, but our mood and personality are expressed through the clothes. Yes! We convey messages every time we dress up. This is a powerful tool, and we must know how to use it wisely.
To illustrate this concept, in this post I would like to talk about «The Revenge Dress». Princess Diana used this particular garment to send a very clear message. Something like: «Look what you are missing out!» or «Fuck you, Charles!».
EL CONTEXTO HISTÓRICO / HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
El 29 de junio de 1994 tuvieron lugar dos acontecimientos clave. Por un lado, se emitía un documental en la BBC sobre el Príncipe Carlos. Por otro lado, la gala benéfica anual de Vanity Fair, organizada en la Serpentine Gallery y a la que, por supuesto, Diana estaba invitada.
El programa pretendía lavar la imagen del heredero al trono, el cual no despertaba mucha simpatía popular tras la separación de Diana dos años antes. Pero se convirtió en todo un fracaso cuando el Príncipe Carlos reconoció públicamente que le había sido infiel, a su todavía esposa, con Camilla Parker Bowles.
Como consecuencia de la humillación pública que suponía reconocer las infidelidades de su matrimono, Diana no tenía intención de asistir a la gala benéfica. Sin embargo, cambió de opinión y fue al evento llevando el famoso «vestido de la venganza».
The 29th of june of 1994 two different events took place. On the one hand, a documentary on BBC about Prince Charles. On the other hand, the Vanity Fair’s fundraising gala, to which, of course, Diana was invited to.
The programme was an excuse to clean up Prince Charles image, who wasn’t very popular at that moment due to the separation what occurred two years before it. However, Charles messed up everything when he confessed that he had been unfaithful to his wife with Camilla Parker Bowles.
Of course, Diana felt so humiliated and ashamed by his public statements that she refused to attend the gala. However, she changed her mind and made her appearance wearing the legendary «Revenge Dress».
EL VESTIDO / THE DRESS
La creación de Christina Stambolian, que lució Lady Di en la gala de Vanity Fair, consistía en un Little Black Dress en crepé de seda, con escote Bardot en forma de corazón y cola lateral.
It was a Christina Stambolian’s design and consisted of a little black dress made of silk crepe, with a heart shape Bardot neckline and a side tail.
Diana completó el conjunto con una ostentosa gargantilla de perlas con un medallón en medio, pendientes, una pulsera, un anillo, medias negras, un par de stilettos y un bolso de mano del mismo color.
Además de que Diana lucía espectacular, llevar este vestido suponía un golpe en la mesa, ya que, siendo todavía Princesa de Gales, estaba rompiendo el protocolo al ir así vestida. En primer lugar, por el color del vestido, puesto que el negro está reservado para el luto oficial. Y, en segundo lugar, por dejar al descubierto los hombros y las piernas por encima de las rodillas, algo que iba en contra de la etiqueta impuesta por la Casa Real británica.
Diana matched the dress with a fancy pearl necklace, earrings, bracelet, ring, black tights, high heels and a purse in black.
Besides her impressive looking, this outfit was a statement, because she was breaking the protocol rules wearing that dress. First, black color is reserved for official mourning, and second, exposing shoulders and legs over the knee was against the protocol of the British Royal Family.
INSPIRACIÓN / INSPIRATION
Podemos encontrar algunas referencias en películas como Desayuno con Diamanes (1961) donde Audrey Hepburn aparece en escena con el mítico LBD de Givenchy acompañado de una elegante gargantilla de perlas al igual que Diana. También, al final de Grease (1978), Olivia Newton-John hace una aparición impresionante utilizando un top con cuello Bardot, que también recuerda mucho al vestido de Lady Di.
This look have some similarities with iconic outfits in films history. For example, in Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961), Audrey Hepburn opens the film with the well-known Givenchy’s LBD and a lavish pearl necklace just as Diana. Also, at the end in Grease (1978), Olivia Newton-John makes an impressive appearance wearing a Bardot neckline top with close resemblance to the «Revenge Dress».
