¡Halloween ya está aquí! Me encanta esta época del año y, para mí, uno de los mejores planazos que puede haber es pasar la tarde viendo pelis siniestras mientras escuchas cómo llueve fuera. Así que he pensado que sería muy guay elaborar una lista con aquellas películas que considero imprescindibles.

It’s spooky season! I love this time of the year and, to me, there is no better plan than spending the afternoon watching creepy movies while you listen the sound of the rain outside. I thought that it will be a good idea make a list with my favorite Halloween movies.

1. EL RETORNO DE LAS BRUJAS / HOCUS POCUS (1993)

Cuando era pequeña, en Halloween ponían esta película en la tele todos los años y me flipaba. ¿Lo malo? Que era muy miedosa (spoiler: lo sigo siendo) y el zombie, Billy Butcherson, me traumatizaba mil. Luego me pasaba el resto de la semana con miedo de que apareciera en algún momento.

El retorno de las brujas es una película divertida, con grandes números musicales y, además, ambientada en Halloween. Todo un must de la estación otoñal.

In Halloween, when I was little I used to watch this movie on TV every year and I loved it. The worst thing is that I was very fearful (spoiler: still I am) and the zombie, Billy Butcherson, traumatized me a lot.

Hocus Pocus is a fun movie, with great musical numbers and also set on Halloween. An essential of the autum season.

2. CASPER / CASPER (1995)

Esta es una película tan preciosa que no puedo evitar llorar con el final. Me parece una joya del cine que, por desgracia, está bastante infravalorada. Tiene comedia, drama, romance y, además, fantasmas. ¿Qué más se le puede pedir a una historia?

This movie is so cute and beautiful that I cannot but help myself from crying at the end. Unfortunately, this gem of cinema is very underrated. It has comedy, drama, romance and ghosts. What more could we ask for!

Por cierto, siempre que la veo no puedo evitar fijarme en el suelo de la mansión. Además de ser muy timburtiano, por la espiral, es igual al que aparece en el videoclip Everybody de los Backstreet Boys.

By the way, every time I watch it I notice that the floor of the Casper’s Mansion, in addition to being like Burton’s aesthetic (because of the spiral), it seems to be indentical to the floor of Backstreet’s Boys videoclip «Everybody».

3. BITELCHÚS / BEETLEJUICE (1988)

Si hay un rey indiscutible de Halloween ese es Tim Burton. Desde la icónica Pesadilla antes de Navidad (1993), hasta Frankenweenie (2012) o La Novia Cadáver (2005), la lista de películas de este director ideales para octubre son muchas, pero en este caso me gustaría destacar Bitelchús.

El tipo de humor, las caracterizaciones y la trama son de lo más originales, por no hablar de la fotografía, las partes del exterior de la casa me recuerdan mucho a los cuadros de Dalí.

If there is a king of Halloween it should be Tim Burton. From the iconic Nightmare Before Christmas (1993), to Frankenweenie (2012) or The Corpse Bride (2005), his list of movies for October is huge. However, in this case I want to highlight the movie Beetlejuice.

The kind of humour, the characterizations and the plot are the really original. Let alone the photography, the exterior parts of the house remind me a lot of Dalí’s paintings.

4. LOS CAZAFANTASMAS I y II / GHOSTBUSTERS I & II ( 1984 – 1989)

Si te gusta todo lo paranormal y la ciencia ficción esta saga de películas es para ti. Además, tiene momentos muy divertidos, la banda sonora es icónica y, sorprendentemente, los efectos especiales han envejecido muy bien.

If you like paranormal things and science fiction, this saga of movies is for you. In addition, it has very funny moments, the soundtrack is iconic and, surprisingly, the special effects have aged very well.

5. LA FAMILIA ADDAMS / THE ADDAMS FAMILY (1991)

Se trata de una comedia muy entretenida sobre una familia de gustos macabros y siniestros. Las caracterizaciones y estilismos me parecen lo más. Y cómo olvidar las cortantes respuestas de Miércoles, interpretada por Christina Ricci, mi personaje favorito. Esta película tuvo otras secuelas que también merecen la pena ver.

It is a very entertaining comedy about a family with macabre and sinister tastes. The characterizations and styles seem to me the best part. And also, the sharp responses of Wednesday, played by Christina Ricci, my favorite character. This movie had other sequels that are also worth watching.

6. EL CUERVO / THE CROW (1994)

Está ambientada en la noche antes de Halloween, conocida como «la noche del diablo». Y cuenta la historia de cómo un músico de rock asesinado vuelve de entre los muertos buscando venganza.

Además, esta película está envuelta de misterio. Brandon Lee, el actor que encarnaba el personaje protagonista murió durante el rodaje por un disparo. Por cierto, la banda sonora es brutal.

It is set on the night before Halloween, known as «the night of the devil». It tells the story of how a murdered rock musician returns from the dead seeking for revenge.

Also, this movie is wrapped in mystery. Brandon Lee, the actor who embodied the main character died during the shooting by a shot. By the way, the soundtrack is stunning.

7. LA MUERTE OS SIENTA TAN BIEN / DEATH BECOMES HER (1992)

En La muerte os sienta tan bien se juega con el humor negro, el terror y la fantasía. A pesar de tener ya bastantes años, trata temas muy de actualidad como la rivalidad entre mujeres y la obsesión por la cirugía estética. Está protagonizada por actores tan conocidos como Goldie Hawn, Meryl Streep y Bruce Willis.

Death becomes her matches black humor, terror and fantasy. Despite being quite a few years old, it deals with very topical issues such as the rivalry between women and the obsession with cosmetic surgery. It stars such famous actors as Goldie Hawn, Meryl Streep and Bruce Willis.

8. JÓVENES Y BRUJAS / THE CRAFT  (1996)

Esta es una película de culto que trata sobre empoderamiento femenino. Centra su trama en un grupo de chicas adolescentes que comienzan a jugar con la brujería. Gracias a eso, estas marginadas del instituto comienzan a tener todo lo que desean, algo que tendrá repercusiones negativas.

Tiene la esencia de las películas de adolescentes de los 90 y los outfits de las protagonistas son, simplemente, icónicos.

This is a cult film that deals with female empowerment. He focuses his plot on a group of teenage girls who begin to play with witchcraft. Thanks to that, these «weirdos» will begin to have everything they want, something that will have negative repercussions.

It has the essence of the 90s teenage movies and the outfits of the protagonists are simply iconic.

9. BUFFY CAZAVAMPIROS / BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER (1992)

Creo que en este blog he hablado muchísimo sobre esta película, pero la verdad es que lo merece. Antes de la exitosa serie, se hizo esta película que juega con los típicos clichés del cine de terror. Así, la animadora superficial y tonta es la encargada de salvar el mundo de los vampiros.

I think in this blog I had talked a lot about this movie, but the truth is what it deserves. Before the successful series, this movie was made using the typical clichés of horror movies. Thus, the superficial and silly cheerleader is in charge of saving the world from vampires.

10. DRÁCULA DE BRAM STOKER / BRAM STOKER’S DRACULA (1992)

Drácula es uno de los personajes terroríficos más importantes de todos los tiempos y en esta adaptación del clásico de Bram Stoker, Coppola consigue plasmar perfectamente la esencia del vampiro. Mención especial a Gary Oldman y su labor como actor al encarnar todas las facetas del Conde.

Dracula is one of the most important terrifying characters of all time and in this adaptation of the Bram Stoker classic Coppola manages to perfectly capture the essence of the vampire. Special mention to Gary Oldman and his work as an actor in embodying all facets of the Count.

11. THE LOVE WITCH / THE LOVE WITCH (2016)

La vi recientemente por primera vez y me ha fascinado completamente. Si te gusta el mundo esotérico, la brujería y la estética retro te va a encantar. Además, también trata temas como el feminismo o el mito del amor romántico.

Más adelante me gustaría escribir un post centrado únicamente en esta película y en sus maravillosos outfits.

I saw it recently for the first time and it fascinated me completely. If you like the esoteric world, witchcraft and retro aesthetics, you will love it. In addition, it also deals with topics such as feminism or the myth of romantic love.
In the future, I would like to write a post focused solely on this film and its wonderful outfits.

12. LA REINA DE LOS CONDENADOS / QUEEN OF THE DAMNED (2002)

En esta película se juntan mis dos pasiones: los vampiros y el heavy metal. Después de un largo letargo, el vampiro Lestat despierta en la actualidad y se convierte en una estrella de rock que se alimenta de sus grupies. Como es de suponer, la banda sonora de esta película es increíble.

In this movie my two passions come together: vampires and heavy metal music. After a long lethargy, the vampire Lestat wakes up today and becomes a rock star that feeds on his grupies. As expected, the soundtrack of this movie is amazing.

13. LEYENDA URBANA / URBAN LEGEND (1998)

Pertenece al género slasher y creo que es la que más miedo da de toda la lista. Cuenta la historia de un asesino que utiliza las leyendas urbanas como inspiración para acabar con sus víctimas. Me gusta mucho cómo está ambientada y la estética que tiene, además de que el final puede ser bastante sorprendente.

I think this slasher movie is the most scary of the list. It tells the story of a murderer who uses urban legends as an inspiration to kill his victims. I really like how it is set and the aesthetics it has, besides the end can be quite surprising.
