GALICIAN LITERATURE DAY
Como gallega que soy, este día tiene mucho significado para mí. Es una forma de celebrar el idioma y su literatura, así como recordarnos lo afortunados que somos por tener un idioma propio que sigue vivo actualmente. Así que he pensado que sería divertido compartir con vosotros algunas de las palabras más bellas, en mi opinión, del gallego.
As a galician girl, this day has a lot of meaning to me. It is a way to celebrate the galician language and its literature. We are so lucky that our own language has survived all this time. So, I think it would be funny to share with you some of the most beautiful galician words to me.
- Ruliña:
- Apelativo cariñoso.
- Term of endearment.
- Riquiño:
- Una palabra muy mona que, literalemente, significa mono.
- A cute word that literally means ‘cute’.
- Lucecú:
- Su significado es ‘luciérnaga’, pero está formada por las palabras ‘luce’ y ‘cu’, que juntas se traducen como «culo luminoso».
- It means ‘firefly’ but the literal meaning of the words “luce” and “cu” put together is something like ‘glowing bum’.
- Vagalume:
- Otra palabra que significa ‘luciérnaga’, pero el significado literal de esta es mucho más poético que el anterior. Podría traducirse como fuego errante.
- This also means ‘firefly’ but the literal meaning is more poetic. Something like ‘wandering fire’.
- Pauto:
- Palabra específica para designar ‘un pacto hecho con el diablo’. Los gallegos tenemos una palabra para definir esa idea ¿No es totalmente genial?
- A special word that solely means ‘a deal with the devil’. If you don’t think this is awesome you’re wrong.
- Cereixa:
- ‘Cereza’.
- ‘Cherry’.
- Cabaliño do demo:
- Con esta palabra nos estamos refiriendo a las libélulas como «caballitos del diablo».
- Even though it is what this means literally, we are not saying ‘devil’s little horse’, but ‘dragonfly’.
- Vacaloura:
- Otro insecto con un nombre compuesto. Este, en concreto, me parece super divertido. El nombre que le damos a los escarabajos ciervo significa literalmente «vaca rubia».
- Another bug with a compound name. This one is kinda ridiculous though. It is not a ‘blonde cow’, but a ‘stag beetle’
- Orballo:
- ‘Rocío’.
- ‘Dew’.
- Faísca:
- ‘Chispa’.
- ‘Spark’.
- Fervenza:
- ‘Cascada’.
- ‘Waterfall’.
- Bebe-los ventos por [alguén]:
- Esta es una expresión. Significa ‘estar enamorado de [alguien]». No obstante, su significado literal es «beber los vientos por [alguien], y, no sé, me parece una forma preciosa de decirlo.
- This is an idiom. It means ‘to have a crush on [somebody]’. The literal meaning is something like ‘to drink the winds for [somebody]’ and idk why I like it so much.
- Lúa:
- ‘Luna’.
- ‘Moon’.
- Teixugo:
- ‘Tejón’.
- ‘Badger’.
- Raíña:
- ‘Reina’.
- ‘Queen’.
- Carballo:
- ‘Roble’.
- ‘Oak’.
- Axouxere:
- Me encanta la sonoridad que tiene esta palabra, tanta sonoridad como su propio significado ‘cascabel’.
- I love the sonority of this word, it has as much sonority as its meaning ‘tinkerbell’.
- Folerpa:
- ‘Copo de Nieve’.
- ‘Snowflake’.
- Cogomelo:
- ‘Seta’.
- ‘Mushroom’.
HAPPY WORLD BOOK DAY
Creo que me podría definir como una rata de biblioteca, así que en un día como este no podía faltar un post hablando sobre libros. En concreto, me gustaría recomendaros algunos de ellos, aquellos que más me han gustado o son especiales para mí.
I can say I’m a bookworm so in such a special day I must talk about books. I would like to recommend some of the books I like the most or the special ones to me.
Las flores del mal es una recopilación de poemas del escritor francés Charles Baudelaire. Las composiciones tienen esa esencia del romanticismo del siglo XIX al mezclar temas como la decadencia y el erotismo. Además, es uno de los libros favoritos de Ville Valo, líder de HIM, por lo que puedes ver mucha inspiración de sus letras en estos poemas.
The flowers of evil is a volume of poetry by the french writer, Charles Baudelaire. The poems deal with themes relating to decadence and eroticism, so it’s a good example of the 19th century romanticism. Also, it is one of the favourite books of Ville Valo, lead singer of HIM, so you can see where his inspiration for the songs lyrics comes from.

Además de los libros, me gusta mucho la historia y este en concreto es uno de los mejores libros sobre historia que he leído en mi vida. En cada capítulo, Stefan Zweig narra de forma mágica alguno de los acontecimientos históricos más relevantes: desde la conquista de Bizancio hasta la batalla de Waterloo o la primera palabra a través del océano. Una forma super amena de entrar en contacto con la historia y tener una visión general de la misma.
I like books but I like history too and this is one of the best books about history I’ve ever read. In every chapter, Stefan Zweig relates, in a amazing way, some of the historical events that changed the world: from the conquest of Byzantium to the battle of Waterloo or the first word across the ocean. This book is a really enjoyable way of get into history and picture a global vision of it.
La temática de esta novela es un poco turbia pero he de decir que esa es la parte más superflua. El argumento trata sobre la obsesión de Humbert Humbert, un profesor de literatura de mediana edad, con su hijastra Dolores Haze, «Lolita», una niña de 12 años. Lolita de Nabokov es un libro que te atrapa y te hace vibrar. Realmente puedes sentir lo que siente cada personaje y entender por qué actúan de la forma en que lo hacen. El inicio del libro es simplemente icónico y el final me hizo llorar.
This novel is a bit controversial, but when you read it is not so disgusting. The plot tells the story about the obsession between Humbert Humbert, a middle-aged literature professor, and his 12-year-old stepdaughter, Dolores Haze, aka Lolita. Lolita by Nabokov is a book that really catches you. You can feel the feelings of the main characters and understand why they act like that. The beginning of the book is simply iconic, and I cried with the ending.
La Princesa Prometida es una de mis películas favoritas de todos los tiempos y, cuando supe de la existencia del libro quise leerlo de inmediato. Así que me puse a buscarlo y lo encontré en Amazon en versión original muy barato. Pensé que sería una buena idea leer este libro en inglés para mejorar mis habilidades con el idioma. Así que sí, La Princesa Prometida es el primer libro que he leído en inglés y creo que ha sido todo un acierto. Si ya me gustaba la película, el libro me ha fascinado. Es un cuento de hadas totalmente maravilloso con personajes geniales. Además, se me hizo más o menos fácil de leer a pesar del idioma.
The Princess Bride is one of my favourite films of all times, so, when I knew there was a book I wanted to read it immediately. Finally I found a copy in original version on Amazon, and it was really cheap. I thought it would be a great idea read this book in english to improve my language skills. So yeah, The Princess Bride was the first book I read in english and it was a completely success. If I loved the film, it is no less true with the book. It is a wonderful fairytale with amazing characters. Moreover, to me it was more or less easy to read even though the language.

REX MANNING DAY OUTFITS
Como cada 8 de abril, aquí está la más sagrada de las festividades: el día de Rex Manning. Sin duda, hay infinidad de planes para hacer en un día como este, lo único de lo que debemos preocuparnos es de elegir el outfit perfecto, así que he decidido crear algunas ideas de outfits basadas en la ropa que llevan los personajes de Empire Records.
It’s april the 8th, and the holiest of holidays: Rex Manning Day. There are a lot of things to do in such a special day. We only have to care about choosing the perfect outfit. So, I decided to give us some ideas based in the clothes of Empire Records’s characters.

Lucas es mi personaje favorito, cada cosa que dice es simplemente genial. Su estilo es simple pero funciona. Indispensable la chupa de cuero si pretendes pasar el día de Rex Manning yendo en moto hasta Atlantic City. Pensé que sería diverdo incluir el estampado de leopardo del sofá en el outfit en foma de bolso.
Lucas is my favorite character from Empire Records. Every single word that comes from his mouth is great. His style is simple but effective. Won’t forget the leather jacket if you think on expend Rex Manning Day going to Atlantic City in motorbike. I thought that it would be funny include the couch’s pattern in the outfit as a purse.

Es 2018 y la igualdad sigue siendo una utopía. Afortunadamente, aquí tengo una lista con algunas de mis películas favoritas con las que inspirarnos gracias a estas poderosas mujeres.
It’s 2018 and equality is still an utopy. Fortunately, here’s some of my favourite films to get inspired by these powerful women.
PELÍCULAS / FILMS
No hay nada más poderoso que una mujer, excepto quizás cuatro adolescentes con poderes de bruja. Y de eso va Jóvenes y Brujas, de eso y de que no hay nada de malo en ser diferente, de hecho, ese es nuestro mayor poder. Esta película nos dice que no debemos tener miedo a no encajar, ¿quién sabe? Quizás conozcas a tres bichos raros como tú y seais amigas para siempre. Más razones para verla vibes de los 90 y ocho palabras: ligera como una pluma, rígida como una tabla.
Nothing’s more powerful than a woman but, how about four teenage girls with witch powers? And that’s the Craft’s main subject, and the fact that there is no problem with being different, that is our great power. This movie shakes off the fear of not fitting in. Who knows? Maybe you will meet other weirdos like you and all of you would be friends forever. More reasons to watch it 90s vibes and eight words: light as a feather stiff as a board.
Disney también puede tener películas feministas y Mulán es una prueba de ello. La película va sobre una chica que tiene que fingir ser un hombre para poder alistarse en el ejército, salvando así la vida de su padre (y de toda China de paso) ¿Cuántas de nuestras heroínas feministas han tenido que travestirse para poder acceder a campos reservados únicamente a los hombres como, por ejemplo, la universidad? Puntos extra: la banda sonora y todos los momentos divertidos con Mushu.
Disney has feminist films as well and Mulan proves it. A young lady who has to pretend she is a boy in order to save her father’s life (and all China, btw). How many of our feminist heroines had to crossdressing as a way to access to men’s reserved fields such as college? Extra points: BSO, and funny Mushu’s scenes.
A simple vista, Una Rubia Muy Legal puede parecer la típica comedia tonta, sin embargo, encierra mensajes feministas muy importantes. Por ejemplo: que ser una apasionada de la moda no está reñido con ir a la universidad, que nunca hay que rendirse y que la autoestima es más importante que el amor romántico.
Legally Blonde seems the typical silly comedy film but it has very powerful messages for women. For example: fashion and college are compatible, never give up and self-esteem is more important than romantic love.
¿Otra comedia tonta? Puede, pero lo bueno de Fuera de Onda es que reivindica la amistad entre mujeres empoderadas que se apoyan unas en otras. Sí, puede que Cher y sus amigas estén un poco obsesionadas también con la ropa y la belleza pero ¿y qué?
Another silly comedy film? Maybe but Clueless shows us that is possible the friendship between empowered women who support each other. Yeah, maybe Cher and her friends are a little bit obsessed with fashion and beauty, so what?
BUFFY’S PROM DRESS
En esta nueva sección trataré, básicamente, de hacer una revisión de aquellos looks y estilismos que veo en las películas y que más me llamen la atención, me impresionen o me inspiren ¡Espero que os guste! ♡

Para esta entrada he decidido centrarme en la película de Buffy Cazavampiros. Quizás algunos no lo sepais, pero antes de que existiera la serie, en 1992 (por cierto, año en el que nací) se estrenó esta película protagonizada por Kristy Swanson, Donald Sutherland y Luke Perry.
In this post I want to focus in Buffy The Vampire Slayer. Maybe some of you didn’t know, but, before it was a tv serie, in 1992 (btw, my birth year) Buffy was release as a movie starring Kristy Swanson, Donald Sutherland and Luke Perry.
Pues bien, sin hacer muchos spoilers por si no la habeis visto, os diré que al final de la película, nuestra protagonista Buffy asiste al típico baile de graduación americano y lo hace enfundada en un precioso vestido blanco.
I don’t want to make spoilers so, I just going to say that at the end of the film, Buffy goes to the typical american prom night wearing a beautiful white dress.
¿A que es bonito? Aunque sí, igual puede resultar un poco cursi al ser tan recargado. Este vestido es muy estilo años 50, me recuerda mucho a los que llevaba Marilyn Monroe.
It is lovely, isn’t it? However, it can be a little bit cheesy with all the ornaments. It looks like the dresses from 50’s decade and especially, the ones that Marilyn Monroe used to wear.
Además, la melena rubia de Buffy hace que el parecido con esta actriz sea más evidente. Pero, sobre todo, el contraste del pelo claro con las cejas oscuras y el recogido me recuerda muchísimo al estilo que llevaba Madonna a finales de los 80 cuando sacó el álbum True Blue.
Moreover, Buffy’s blonde hair makes her similarity with Marilyn more evident. Nevertheless, it is clear to me that her brown eyebrows and hairstyle are influenced by Madonna‘s look in True Blue.
Así que Buffy tiene un vestido bonito y algo cursi en su baile de graduación ¿eso es todo? No, aún no os he contado lo mejor. Durante el baile de graduación a Buffy se le engancha su vestido, y al tirar de él, se arranca toda la parte de abajo, quedando un vestido corto, después de esto, su novio, Pike le deja su chupa de cuero.
So, she has a beautiful/cheesy dress, that’s all? Absolutely not, I haven’t tell you the best part yet. During the prom, Buffy’s dress had been hooked, so she ripped the fabric out turning it in a short dress. After that, her boyfriend Pike gives her his leather jacket.
La chupa de cuero negra le da al conjunto mucha fuerza y hace que un simple vestido blanco tenga ese punto original y rockero. Y así es como un vestido para el baile de graduación se combierte en un look para ir a matar vampiros.
The biker gives the strength that the outfit needs. With the leather jacket, a simple white dress can be original and rocker. And that’s how a prom night dress turns into the perfect outfit to kill vampires.
